Yakima could be part of the solution to airport problem

By  Robert Hodgman Special to The Seattle Times If you’ve traveled through Seattle-Tacoma International Airport in the last few months, you may have noticed it’s a bit more crowded than it has been in the recent past.  Post-pandemic air travel has already surpassed pre-pandemic levels and all indicators are air travel will continue to grow.

We Desperately Need a New Airport: New Effort Seems Stymied from the Start

By Mike Merritt Even as Seattle-Tacoma International Airport soars back toward record passenger volumes, the state’s rebooted effort to solve the region’s looming air-transportation crisis is getting a slow start out of the gate. The governor has yet to appoint anyone to the new Commercial Aviation Work Group (CAWG), a 19-member body authorized by the

    CACC Final Report 2023

Per SSB 5370 (2019), as revised by SSB 5165 (2021), the following survey information below is provided as the final report to the Legislature from the Commercial Aviation Coordinating Commission (CACC). At the onset, it is important to note that as a result of legislative action in 2022, the timeline for the Commission’s work was extended to June 15, 2023. Executive summary The Commercial Aviation Coordinating Commission’s final hybrid in-person and online meeting June 9, 2023, focused on how to ensure that the work of the CACC provides a solid foundation and baseline of information to be used by the follow-on work group established by ESHB 1791. The CACC voted to use their last survey as the final report to the Legislature. This report has the survey results and comments for the work group in ESHB 1791 to use as a guide as they continue the work CACC started. https://app.leg.wa.gov/billsummary?BillNumber=5370&Year=2019 https://app.leg.wa.gov/billsummary?BillNumber=5165&Year=2021 https://wsdot.wa.gov/travel/aviation/commercial-aviation-coordinating-commission https://wsdot.wa.gov/travel/aviation/commercial-aviation-coordinating-commission https://app.leg.wa.gov/billsummary?BillNumber=1791&Year=2023 Survey Overview Note: The data and commentary in the survey below is subjective and to be used as a guide for the upcoming work group in ESHB 1791. The 16-question survey was completed by 16 Commissioners: 10 voting members and 6 non- voting members. The majority did not prefer a “No Action” alternative as the CACC’s response to the Legislature and believe the future of commercial aviation capacity needs (passenger and cargo) can only be met with a greenfield site that has yet to be identified. The majority also believe Paine Field will continue to add…

    HB 1791: Peace With Honor

The passage of 1791-S.PL acknowledges that the battle for a second airport process (known as the CACC) is lost. But, let’s pretend it’s not. However, if previous efforts (such as the Flight Plan Study of 1989) are any indication, HB-1791 will not only result in years of delay, it will actually work to accelerate the pace

That means we will again have debate on the Senate floor and in-person testimony in committees. We'll continue the options for written and some virtual committee testimony to keep our work transparent and accessible and to make it easier for people to testify. Most importantly, I hope you will stay in touch so that I can best represent your issues and concerns in Olympia. In this pamphlet, you'll find a variety of ways you can be part of the legislative process, from start to finish. Public Comment Period Jeni Woock, Gig Harbor City Council member, commented that those in the city of Gig Harbor and all of the citizens there have grave concerns over any expansion to the Tacoma Narrows Airport. Looking at the master plan from the Tacoma Narrows Airport, the challenges are many and not suitable for airport expansion. Noise and particulates are something our community does not want to see. Her concern is Pierce County Council, who is the sponsor for this Tacoma Narrows Airport, sent a letter in to the Commission asking to have this airport removed from consideration and it has not been removed from consideration.
