Airport Key Map: Sea-Tac Airport Property Zones

    ★ 32
This Airport Key Map, published by the Port of Seattle on June 15, 2014, provides a general reference overview of property zones surrounding Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. It identifies distinct areas including the Airfield, Terminal, Commercial, South of Airfield, South of 200th, and North of Airfield zones, and distinguishes between Port of Seattle property, lease boundaries, non-Port property, land available for redevelopment, and the proposed SR 509 corridor. The aerial photo, taken in Spring 2012, is intended for general reference only and is not approved for navigation use.

Consequences of parallel runway operations at Sea-Tac Airport

This presentation examines the consequences of runway configuration changes at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (Sea-Tac), including louder departure noise for Burien residents, reduced airport capacity, and potential FAA workaround taxi routes. It references Seattle Air Traffic Control Tower standard operating procedures for opening and closing runways, and analyzes the feasibility of simultaneous parallel runway operations under FAA Order JO 7110.65. Key technical challenges identified include the need to relocate the Instrument Landing System, extreme ramp congestion, and the possibility of displacing the Runway 34R threshold by approximately 3,400 feet to achieve parallel threshold alignment.

JEFPO One Departure (RNAV) — Seattle-Tacoma International Airport Standard Instrument Departure Procedure

The JEFPO One Departure is an RNAV instrument departure procedure at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), available only between 10 PM and 6 AM local time, designed to route departing aircraft northwestward via a series of waypoints toward JEFPO. Aircraft departing runways 34L, 34C, and 34R must climb on a heading of 344° and maintain a minimum climb rate of 500 feet per nautical mile up to 940 feet, then follow specific tracks depending on their runway. Departures from runways 16L, 16C, and 16R are not authorized under this procedure, reflecting noise abatement and air traffic control considerations for the surrounding communities.

Issues

Sea-Tac Airport is currently undergoing the largest and longest expansion in its history, collectively known as the Sustainable Airport Master Plan (SAMP). Some of it you can already hear, but you’re probably not aware of what it all means. Here’s what you need to know.

As the source for federal transportation grants, the Puget Sound Regional Council was charged with developing a system to meet the growing need for commercial aviation. When the search for a second airport failed, they authorized the Port of Seattle to build the Third Runway, with a mandate to develop a noise abatement and mitigation program. In their effort to stop the Third Runway, the ACC argued over every detail of the Port's efforts--including property buyouts and sound insulation. The dispute was meant to be settled by a three member Expert Arbitration Panel. This is their final report. It finds 2-1, that the Port's program was insufficient in several respects. Despite that, funding for the Third Runway was approved by the PSRC, and the 'Port Package' program, proceeded largely unchanged. Expert Arbitration Panel's final decision finding that the Port of Seattle had not shown sufficient reduction in real on-the-ground noise impacts to satisfy noise reduction conditions required for approval of a third runway at Sea-Tac International Airport. The majority decision concluded the Port's noise abatement programs were insufficient despite being impressive in scope.
