Letter from Virginia Lane Regarding Zoning Non-Compliance at Glendale and Glacier Schools

A community member raises concerns about zoning non-compliance at closed Highline School District schools, including Glendale and Glacier, noting that the County was aware of violations as early as a July 18th letter. The document questions whether proper permitting processes were followed before tenants moved into Glacier, and references a list of non-compliant businesses in the Highline vicinity submitted to King County zoning officials. The author expresses broader concern about lack of transparency and accountability among county officials and the school district, and worries that a two-year lease at Glacier could set a long-term precedent.

Handwritten Notes: FAA Responsibility and Community Complaints Regarding Airline Safety and School Building Use

A community member raises questions about who should accept responsibility for airport-related concerns — the Port of Seattle, King County, the FAA, or local residents who helped plan the N.S.I.P. — noting that the FAA is responsible for safe aircraft use but that following its guidelines could avert greater tragedy in the event of an airline mishap. A separate complaint is also filed against the Highline Public School District regarding the conversion of Boulevard Elementary School and Seaer High School into non-educational facilities, with the writer citing code violations and lack of concern for impact on adjacent neighborhoods.

Issues

Sea-Tac Airport is currently undergoing the largest and longest expansion in its history, collectively known as the Sustainable Airport Master Plan (SAMP). Some of it you can already hear, but you’re probably not aware of what it all means. Here’s what you need to know.

As the source for federal transportation grants, the Puget Sound Regional Council was charged with developing a system to meet the growing need for commercial aviation. When the search for a second airport failed, they authorized the Port of Seattle to build the Third Runway, with a mandate to develop a noise abatement and mitigation program. In their effort to stop the Third Runway, the ACC argued over every detail of the Port's efforts--including property buyouts and sound insulation. The dispute was meant to be settled by a three member Expert Arbitration Panel. This is their final report. It finds 2-1, that the Port's program was insufficient in several respects. Despite that, funding for the Third Runway was approved by the PSRC, and the 'Port Package' program, proceeded largely unchanged. Expert Arbitration Panel's final decision finding that the Port of Seattle had not shown sufficient reduction in real on-the-ground noise impacts to satisfy noise reduction conditions required for approval of a third runway at Sea-Tac International Airport. The majority decision concluded the Port's noise abatement programs were insufficient despite being impressive in scope.
