Proposed Des Moines Creek Business Park West Development: Hearing Presentation by Laura Hartema, Friends of Des Moines Creek

Laura Hartema of Friends of Des Moines Creek presented concerns about the proposed Des Moines Creek Business Park West Development (File #LUA2022-0044) in October 2024, highlighting significant environmental impacts including the removal of over 500 trees, filling of wetlands and streams, and more than 30 acres of site disturbance. The presentation compared 1936 and 2023 aerial photos showing the area remains largely forested, and raised issues such as arsenic in soils, stormwater management concerns, and negative effects on neighboring residential properties. The group argues the project requires more thorough environmental review to demonstrate it will not cause significant harm to critical natural areas and the surrounding community.

Washington State Ecology Dirt Alert Map: Tacoma Smelter Plume Arsenic Concentrations Near Sea-Tac Airport

A screenshot of the Washington State Department of Ecology's 'Dirt Alert' web mapping application showing the Tacoma Smelter Plume tab, displaying predicted arsenic soil concentrations across the south King County / Pierce County area including SeaTac, Des Moines, Vashon Island, and Maury Island. The legend indicates concentration zones ranging from under 20 ppm (light yellow) to over 100 ppm (dark purple), with SeaTac Airport and surrounding communities falling within the 40.1–100 ppm range.

    Heavy metals in the garden

This Washington State University Cooperative Extension factsheet explains the risks of heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, and arsenic in garden soils, with a focus on the greater Seattle-Tacoma region. It identifies locations most likely to have contamination, including sites near old painted buildings, heavily traveled roads, and areas affected by the former Tacoma smelter. The factsheet offers practical gardening tips to reduce exposure, such as growing fruiting crops, adding organic matter, liming soil, and washing produce thoroughly.

EXH AR019625: SSL MINTEQ Modeling — Background Pore-Water Chemistry, Assumptions, Limitations, Metal Kd Results

This technical document describes the background water chemistry and modeling assumptions used to estimate how metals move through soil and groundwater at contaminated sites. It outlines key simplifications in the MINTEQ geochemical model, including the assumption of chemical equilibrium and the exclusion of redox potential, and presents soil-sorption values (Kd) for various metals such as arsenic, chromium, and cadmium that vary with soil pH. The results show that metal mobility is most strongly influenced by pH levels in the subsurface environment.

Results from Soil Contamination Study of King County

A soil contamination study by Washington State's Department of Ecology and Public Health – Seattle & King County found elevated levels of arsenic and lead in southern King County soils, linked primarily to the former Asarco smelter in Ruston. Contamination levels were highest near the smelter and on Vashon and Maury Islands, with concentrations decreasing further from the source and following prevailing wind patterns. While the findings are a concern rather than an emergency, officials stress that the study reflects regional trends only and cannot predict contamination levels at individual properties.

Issues

Sea-Tac Airport is currently undergoing the largest and longest expansion in its history, collectively known as the Sustainable Airport Master Plan (SAMP). Some of it you can already hear, but you’re probably not aware of what it all means. Here’s what you need to know.

As the source for federal transportation grants, the Puget Sound Regional Council was charged with developing a system to meet the growing need for commercial aviation. When the search for a second airport failed, they authorized the Port of Seattle to build the Third Runway, with a mandate to develop a noise abatement and mitigation program. In their effort to stop the Third Runway, the ACC argued over every detail of the Port's efforts--including property buyouts and sound insulation. The dispute was meant to be settled by a three member Expert Arbitration Panel. This is their final report. It finds 2-1, that the Port's program was insufficient in several respects. Despite that, funding for the Third Runway was approved by the PSRC, and the 'Port Package' program, proceeded largely unchanged. Expert Arbitration Panel's final decision finding that the Port of Seattle had not shown sufficient reduction in real on-the-ground noise impacts to satisfy noise reduction conditions required for approval of a third runway at Sea-Tac International Airport. The majority decision concluded the Port's noise abatement programs were insufficient despite being impressive in scope.
