The Effect of Occupational Exposures to Aircraft Ultrafine Particles on Acute Cardiorespiratory Health, and Control Using Personal Protective Equipment

    ★
A University of Washington thesis by Mariah Dittmore investigates whether short-term exposure to ultrafine particles from aircraft engines causes measurable cardiorespiratory harm at concentrations found in surrounding communities, and whether personal protective equipment can reduce that harm. The research builds on a 2018 Los Angeles study that linked walking near aircraft pollution to elevated blood inflammation markers, while noting that roadway traffic posed its own distinct respiratory risks. The findings are relevant to policy discussions around Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and the health of workers and residents exposed to aircraft emissions.

2025/2026 StART Shared Federal Aircraft Noise & Emissions Policy Priorities

Communities around Seattle-Tacoma International Airport have outlined their top federal policy priorities for 2025/2026 to address growing aircraft noise and air emissions concerns. Key goals include passing legislation to fund repairs for failed home sound insulation packages, fully implementing noise and emissions provisions from the 2024 FAA Reauthorization Act, and investing in sustainable aviation fuels and alternative aircraft technologies. The group also plans a 2026 Washington D.C. fly-in to advocate directly with Congressional and Administration leaders for these community-driven reforms.

Urban Ultrafine Particles – Advisory Group Meeting

The University of Washington held an Advisory Group Meeting on October 3, 2025, focused on urban ultrafine particles (nano-particles) and their sources, including aviation-related emissions near areas like Sea-Tac Airport. The meeting aimed to foster dialogue, address knowledge gaps from the MOV-UP study, identify priority research questions, and guide scientific research on air quality monitoring. Advisors were asked to provide feedback on study design and methodology, with a time commitment including annual meetings and optional review of study outputs.

Issues

Sea-Tac Airport is currently undergoing the largest and longest expansion in its history, collectively known as the Sustainable Airport Master Plan (SAMP). Some of it you can already hear, but you’re probably not aware of what it all means. Here’s what you need to know.

As the source for federal transportation grants, the Puget Sound Regional Council was charged with developing a system to meet the growing need for commercial aviation. When the search for a second airport failed, they authorized the Port of Seattle to build the Third Runway, with a mandate to develop a noise abatement and mitigation program. In their effort to stop the Third Runway, the ACC argued over every detail of the Port's efforts--including property buyouts and sound insulation. The dispute was meant to be settled by a three member Expert Arbitration Panel. This is their final report. It finds 2-1, that the Port's program was insufficient in several respects. Despite that, funding for the Third Runway was approved by the PSRC, and the 'Port Package' program, proceeded largely unchanged. Expert Arbitration Panel's final decision finding that the Port of Seattle had not shown sufficient reduction in real on-the-ground noise impacts to satisfy noise reduction conditions required for approval of a third runway at Sea-Tac International Airport. The majority decision concluded the Port's noise abatement programs were insufficient despite being impressive in scope.
