Part 150 is SAMP Part #1

Attend June 5, 6 and 8 workshops to learn about new noise boundaries

Sea-Tac Airport is undertaking a Part 150 Study, a section of FAA regulations governing community noise impacts. These studies take several years to complete, but you should care now and attend the June 5, June 6 or June 8, Workshops for a couple of reasons:

  • The Part 150 program sets the official noise boundary around the airport (called the DNL65–everything with the FAA has an acronym). If your home is inside that boundary, you get sound insulation (aka a Port Package). If not, you don’t. For that reason alone, you should show up.
  • These workshops also serve as the unofficial first step in the the Sustainable Airport Master Plan (SAMP) environmental review process. The SAMP will determine not only how much the airport will be allowed to increase air traffic over the next fifteen years, but how much (if any) mitigation resources and compensation both your city (and you personally) may receive in exchange.

The stakes could not be higher for residents. The airport is on track to reach record levels of operations this year, and will set a new record every year thereafter. At a personal level, that means more noise and more air pollution. But it also has implications for your City. Historically, each airport expansion has had serious negative impacts to the economy, education and public safety of each of the surrounding communities.

Some history

This is the fifth Part 150 Study the airport has conducted since 1985. But until now, these have never worked to the benefit of residents. Instead, it has been Greenwashing, pure and simple–a way for the Port of Seattle to “check a box” and say they have complied with FAA regulations. The last Part 150 actually decreased the area eligible for sound insulation. And each city has been complicit in this. Instead of fighting meaningfully for improvements to quality of life, they have repeatedly bought into empty promises of ‘economic development’ that have never worked.

We know what went wrong and how not to make the same mistakes. So this time can and should be different.  But only if you get educated and show up. The only way we can lose is if you take what the Port of Seattle says at face value. See you there.
