This 1973 fact sheet from the Sea-Tac Communities Plan describes a 44.2-square-mile study area surrounding Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, covering communities including Burien, White Center, Normandy Park, and Des Moines, with a 1970 population of 137,000. The document inventories local schools, parks, utilities, and services in the region, and provides socioeconomic data showing a predominantly white, middle-income population with a median household income of $11,238. The plan was jointly sponsored by King County and the Port of Seattle with the goal of maximizing compatibility between the airport and its surrounding communities.

Draft report of the Land Use Committee: Sea-Tac Communities Plan

This draft report from the King County Policy Development Commission's Land Use Committee outlines the planning process for the Sea-Tac Communities Plan, a joint effort between King County and the Port of Seattle funded by a $640,000 FAA grant awarded in 1972. The plan aimed to concurrently develop a master plan for Sea-Tac International Airport and a companion land-use plan for surrounding communities most affected by airport noise and operations. A Policy Advisory Committee representing government agencies, consultants, and community groups oversaw the process, which moved through four phases covering data collection, site analysis, alternative plan development, and final recommendations for adoption by both the King County Council and the Seattle Port Commission.

Sea-Tac Communities Plan: Map Supplement to Sixth Month Report

The Sea-Tac/Communities Plan is a planning study co-sponsored by the Port of Seattle and King County, funded through a federal grant under the Airport and Airways Development Act of 1970. It serves as a map supplement to a sixth-month report, covering community trends and characteristics, land use, ground transportation and traffic, aesthetic and visual qualities, and natural determinants in the communities surrounding Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The 1973 report includes demographic data such as median age, the percentage of residents under 20, and the percentage of residents 65 and older, mapped across 1970 census tracts in the Sea-Tac area.

    Heavy metals in the garden

This Washington State University Cooperative Extension factsheet explains the risks of heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, and arsenic in garden soils, with a focus on the greater Seattle-Tacoma region. It identifies locations most likely to have contamination, including sites near old painted buildings, heavily traveled roads, and areas affected by the former Tacoma smelter. The factsheet offers practical gardening tips to reduce exposure, such as growing fruiting crops, adding organic matter, liming soil, and washing produce thoroughly.

Background: Racial and economic inequities in birth outcomes

A University of Washington Epidemiology researcher, Anna Harrington, presents findings showing that communities near Seattle-Tacoma International Airport have higher rates of preterm births and are home to a disproportionate share of King County's people of color and low-income residents. The presentation proposes a qualitative research study to explore how airport community stakeholders perceive the public health risks of SeaTac air pollution on pregnant people, and what barriers they face in reducing that exposure. The study aims to understand whether risk perceptions and mitigation strategies differ based on the racial identity and income level of pregnant individuals.

As the source for federal transportation grants, the Puget Sound Regional Council was charged with developing a system to meet the growing need for commercial aviation. When the search for a second airport failed, they authorized the Port of Seattle to build the Third Runway, with a mandate to develop a noise abatement and mitigation program. In their effort to stop the Third Runway, the ACC argued over every detail of the Port's efforts--including property buyouts and sound insulation. The dispute was meant to be settled by a three member Expert Arbitration Panel. This is their final report. It finds 2-1, that the Port's program was insufficient in several respects. Despite that, funding for the Third Runway was approved by the PSRC, and the 'Port Package' program, proceeded largely unchanged. Expert Arbitration Panel's final decision finding that the Port of Seattle had not shown sufficient reduction in real on-the-ground noise impacts to satisfy noise reduction conditions required for approval of a third runway at Sea-Tac International Airport. The majority decision concluded the Port's noise abatement programs were insufficient despite being impressive in scope.
