Impacts of Aviation Emissions on Air Quality Near Hanscom Field, Bedford, Massachusetts – Results of a Two-Season Monitoring Campaign
A comprehensive study measuring ultrafine particles, lead, and other air pollutants from aviation emissions at Hanscom Field across four surrounding Massachusetts towns. The study found that UFP concentrations were up to two-fold higher at downwind sites and often exceeded WHO guidelines, with the highest impacts in Bedford and Lexington. -

Long-term exposure to ultrafine particles and natural and cause-specific mortality
A scientific study examining the association between long-term exposure to ultrafine particles (UFP) and mortality in the Netherlands. The study followed 10.8 million adults from 2013-2019 and found significant associations between UFP exposure and natural, cardiovascular, respiratory, and lung cancer mortality. -

The FAA’s 65 dBA DNL is not a safe noise exposure level for the American public
Academic paper presented at the 183rd Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America arguing that the FAA’s 65 dBA day-night average sound level standard is not safe for public health. The paper discusses how the EPA calculated safer levels at 55 dB for outdoor activities and 45 dB for indoor activities, and examines the non-auditory -

The Effect of Occupational Exposures to Aircraft Ultrafine Particles on Acute Cardiorespiratory Health, and Control Using Personal Protective Equipment
A University of Washington thesis presentation by Mariah Dittmore examining the short-term cardiorespiratory health effects of exposure to aircraft-related ultrafine pollution in communities. The research builds on previous studies showing increased inflammatory markers from aircraft pollution exposure. -

Environmental Justice, before and after Executive Order 12898: What are agencies doing, how well are they doing it, and what else can be done?
This paper examines environmental justice requirements, best practices, and challenges facing federal agencies since Executive Order 12898. It explores the gap in EJ implementation after the order’s issuance, analyzes case studies from Porter Ranch and Flint, and proposes stopgap measures for consistent federal EJ compliance. -

Low Frequency Noise. What we know, what we do not know, and what we would like to know
Academic review paper examining perception of low frequency noise and infrasound, including human responses, measurement challenges, and the historical misconceptions that have created public fear around these sound phenomena. The paper addresses hearing thresholds, sensitivity variations, and unexplained complaints of low frequency noise. -

Low Frequency Noise. What we know, what we do not know, and what we would like to know
A review paper examining human perception of low frequency noise (LFN) and responses to it. The paper discusses what is known about LFN, identifies gaps in understanding, and explores possibilities for enhanced sensitivity and false perceptions related to low frequency noise complaints.
