Impacts of Aviation Emissions on Air Quality Near Hanscom Field, Bedford, Massachusetts – Results of a Two-Season Monitoring Campaign

A comprehensive study measuring ultrafine particles, lead, and other air pollutants from aviation emissions at Hanscom Field across four surrounding Massachusetts towns. The study found that UFP concentrations were up to two-fold higher at downwind sites and often exceeded WHO guidelines, with the highest impacts in Bedford and Lexington.

SMPS Particle Bin Counts and Geometric Mean at 10th&Weller

This plot shows Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) aerosol particle size distribution data (5–382 nm) collected at the 10th & Weller monitoring site, generated on 2025-09-15 at 13:08:09 PST with last UTC data timestamp of 2025-09-15 19:56:31. The contour plot displays log(10) particle counts over local PST time from approximately 13:11 on September 14 through 12:56 on September 15, with brown diamond markers indicating the geometric mean particle diameter over time.

Impacts of Aviation Emissions on Community Health

Researchers from the University of Washington presented findings to King County's Airport Round Table Advisory Committee showing that aviation emissions pose significant public health risks to nearby communities. Airports account for 70% of airborne lead emissions in King County, primarily from piston-engine aircraft burning leaded aviation gasoline, and multiple studies link living close to such airports with elevated blood lead levels in children. The presentation also highlighted broader health harms from aviation pollutants—including ultrafine particles and nitrogen oxides—affecting neurological, cardiovascular, and respiratory health.

2025/2026 StART Shared Federal Aircraft Noise & Emissions Policy Priorities

The StART (Sea-Tac Airport Roundtable) coalition has outlined its 2025/2026 federal policy priorities aimed at reducing aircraft noise and air emissions around Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Key goals include passing new legislation to fund failed noise insulation repairs and expand EPA authority over aviation emissions, securing funding for sustainable aviation fuel programs, and pushing the FAA to fully implement noise and emissions provisions from the 2024 FAA Reauthorization Act that have stalled under new federal leadership. The group also plans a Washington, D.C. advocacy trip in spring 2026 to advance these priorities with Congressional and Administration officials.

Issues

Sea-Tac Airport is currently undergoing the largest and longest expansion in its history, collectively known as the Sustainable Airport Master Plan (SAMP). Some of it you can already hear, but you’re probably not aware of what it all means. Here’s what you need to know.

As the source for federal transportation grants, the Puget Sound Regional Council was charged with developing a system to meet the growing need for commercial aviation. When the search for a second airport failed, they authorized the Port of Seattle to build the Third Runway, with a mandate to develop a noise abatement and mitigation program. In their effort to stop the Third Runway, the ACC argued over every detail of the Port's efforts--including property buyouts and sound insulation. The dispute was meant to be settled by a three member Expert Arbitration Panel. This is their final report. It finds 2-1, that the Port's program was insufficient in several respects. Despite that, funding for the Third Runway was approved by the PSRC, and the 'Port Package' program, proceeded largely unchanged. Expert Arbitration Panel's final decision finding that the Port of Seattle had not shown sufficient reduction in real on-the-ground noise impacts to satisfy noise reduction conditions required for approval of a third runway at Sea-Tac International Airport. The majority decision concluded the Port's noise abatement programs were insufficient despite being impressive in scope.
