Your 2¢ Worth, Meeting #3: Aesthetic Inventory — Sea-Tac Communities

Community members from Sea-Tac area neighborhoods gathered at Meeting #3 to identify local assets worth preserving—including trees, parks, historic routes, natural streams, and unique communities like Seahurst—and to voice concerns about poor planning, airport noise, and lack of public services. Residents called for comprehensive planning, revised building codes, tax incentives for aesthetically pleasing development, and stronger government action to protect green spaces and waterfront access. Frustration with the Port of Seattle's unresponsiveness to community input on noise and development issues was a recurring theme across multiple neighborhood groups.

Your 2¢ Worth — Meeting #2: Urban Streams, A Hard Look

Community meeting notes from the Highline area (near Sea-Tac) capture neighborhood group responses to questions about urban streams and stormwater management. Residents from areas including Des Moines, North Hill, Shorewood, and Riverton Heights expressed strong opposition to traditional drainage solutions such as culverts and concrete channels, citing harm to water balance, wildlife, and quality of life. Groups broadly favored preserving natural streams for recreational, aesthetic, and ecological benefits, while debating appropriate levels of public access.

As the source for federal transportation grants, the Puget Sound Regional Council was charged with developing a system to meet the growing need for commercial aviation. When the search for a second airport failed, they authorized the Port of Seattle to build the Third Runway, with a mandate to develop a noise abatement and mitigation program. In their effort to stop the Third Runway, the ACC argued over every detail of the Port's efforts--including property buyouts and sound insulation. The dispute was meant to be settled by a three member Expert Arbitration Panel. This is their final report. It finds 2-1, that the Port's program was insufficient in several respects. Despite that, funding for the Third Runway was approved by the PSRC, and the 'Port Package' program, proceeded largely unchanged. Expert Arbitration Panel's final decision finding that the Port of Seattle had not shown sufficient reduction in real on-the-ground noise impacts to satisfy noise reduction conditions required for approval of a third runway at Sea-Tac International Airport. The majority decision concluded the Port's noise abatement programs were insufficient despite being impressive in scope.
