Leaded aviation gasoline exposure risk at Reid-Hillview Airport in Santa Clara County, California

This 2021 report by Mountain Data Group, commissioned by Santa Clara County, examines the health risks posed to children living near Reid-Hillview Airport in California due to lead emissions from leaded aviation gasoline. It analyzes statistical associations between children's blood lead levels and factors such as residential distance from the airport, aircraft traffic, and fuel sales. Note that while this report focuses on lead exposure from aviation fuel at a California airport, it does not address noise policy or Sea-Tac Airport operations.

The Relationship between Airplane Emissions & Pre-Mature Births

A December 2020 presentation by Public Health Seattle and King County researcher Kris Johnson, PhD, examines the link between airplane emissions and premature births. The slides outline serious health risks associated with preterm birth, including cognitive delays, hearing and vision problems, SIDS, ADHD, and greater likelihood of chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes in adulthood. Mothers who deliver preterm also face elevated risks of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and repeated preterm deliveries.

Community health and airport operations related noise and air pollution: Report to the legislature in response to Washington State House Bill 1109

This December 2020 report, prepared by Public Health Seattle & King County in response to Washington State House Bill 1109, examines how noise and air pollution from airport operations affect the health of communities near Sea-Tac Airport compared to the rest of King County. It reviews evidence on pollutants such as ultrafine particulates, their links to conditions like asthma, heart disease, and reduced life expectancy, and includes findings from a University of Washington study on air quality. The report concludes with recommendations for addressing these public health impacts.

Lessons Learned from Remote Working During COVID-19: Can the Government Save Money Through Maximizing Efficient Use of Leased Space?

This July 2020 U.S. Senate hearing examined lessons learned from government employees working remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic, exploring whether the federal government could save money by reducing its use of leased office space. Witnesses from Dell Technologies, Global Workplace Analytics, and the California Air Resources Board testified about the benefits and challenges of telework. Note: This document does not contain content directly related to Sea-Tac Airport noise policy.

Issues

Sea-Tac Airport is currently undergoing the largest and longest expansion in its history, collectively known as the Sustainable Airport Master Plan (SAMP). Some of it you can already hear, but you’re probably not aware of what it all means. Here’s what you need to know.

As the source for federal transportation grants, the Puget Sound Regional Council was charged with developing a system to meet the growing need for commercial aviation. When the search for a second airport failed, they authorized the Port of Seattle to build the Third Runway, with a mandate to develop a noise abatement and mitigation program. In their effort to stop the Third Runway, the ACC argued over every detail of the Port's efforts--including property buyouts and sound insulation. The dispute was meant to be settled by a three member Expert Arbitration Panel. This is their final report. It finds 2-1, that the Port's program was insufficient in several respects. Despite that, funding for the Third Runway was approved by the PSRC, and the 'Port Package' program, proceeded largely unchanged. Expert Arbitration Panel's final decision finding that the Port of Seattle had not shown sufficient reduction in real on-the-ground noise impacts to satisfy noise reduction conditions required for approval of a third runway at Sea-Tac International Airport. The majority decision concluded the Port's noise abatement programs were insufficient despite being impressive in scope.
