Flight Pattern Kids: Sea-Tac Airport Environmental Health Research Flyer

The 'Flight Pattern Kids' group, a non-profit based near Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, claims that residents living within a 3-mile radius of the airport experience significantly elevated rates of cancer, birth defects, and auto-immune diseases compared to the general population. Their self-reported study of 330+ families suggests these health issues stem from toxic environmental exposure linked to airport operations, which they argue causes gene mutations passed across generations. The group is calling for further environmental testing of air, water, and soil in the surrounding area.

An underestimated danger: Noise and air pollution are new and important cardiovascular risk factors

Environmental stressors such as traffic noise pose a threat to human health worldwide. A study by DZHK researcher Prof. Thomas Münzel, published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, shows that noise has negative effects on blood vessels and the brain within a very short exposure time. Other recent review articles co-authored by him show

Mitigation of aircraft noise-induced vascular dysfunction and oxidative stress by exercise, fasting, and pharmacological α1AMPK activation: molecular proof of a protective key role of endothelial α1AMPK against environmental noise exposure

A scientific study found that aircraft noise exposure causes measurable damage to blood vessel function and increases harmful oxidative stress in mice, mimicking cardiovascular risks seen in human populations living near airports. Researchers demonstrated that three interventions — regular physical exercise, intermittent fasting, and a drug that activates a protective enzyme called α1AMPK — can each effectively prevent or reduce this noise-induced vascular damage. These findings suggest that lifestyle changes like exercise and dietary restriction may offer practical, evidence-based strategies for mitigating the cardiovascular health risks associated with aircraft noise exposure.

Projecting the health and economic burden of aircraft noise

This study projects the long-term health and economic costs of aircraft noise generated by the NextGen automated flight system, focusing on communities near Baltimore Washington International Airport. Using a mathematical simulation model, researchers estimated the impact of noise exposure on cardiovascular disease, anxiety, annoyance, and low birth weight over periods of 10, 20, and 30 years. The findings are intended to inform noise mitigation policies and provide a clearer picture of the public health consequences of modern air traffic management systems.

Associations between aircraft noise exposure and self-reported sleep duration and quality in the United States-based prospective Nurses’ Health Study cohort

A large study of over 35,000 female nurses across the United States found that exposure to aircraft nighttime noise levels at or above 45 decibels was associated with 23% greater odds of sleeping less than 7 hours per night. The research, which tracked participants living near 90 U.S. airports between 2000 and 2014, suggests that aircraft noise — including at levels below the federally regulated threshold of 65 decibels — may meaningfully disrupt sleep duration. Stronger effects were observed among residents in the Western United States and those living near major cargo airports, findings with direct relevance to communities around airports like Sea-Tac.

  • Calculating DNL65

We’ve often made the claim that DNL65 is not really a unit of measure. And when we say that it comes off as both condescending and patronizing. Okeedokee… If you want to understand DNL65,  you should probably start by going to the regulations governing Airport Noise Compatibility and Planning aka Part 150. Got it? Great.

Air pollution, white matter microstructure, and brain volumes: Periods of susceptibility from pregnancy to preadolescence

A study of over 3,500 children found that exposure to air pollution — including nitrogen dioxide and fine particulate matter — during pregnancy and early childhood is linked to differences in brain development measurable by MRI scans at ages 9–12. The research identified conception through age 5 as particularly sensitive periods, during which higher pollution levels were associated with less organized white matter and changes in certain brain region volumes. These findings suggest that reducing air pollution exposure during pregnancy and early childhood may be important for healthy brain development.

The diagram includes an anatomical illustration of the human respiratory system with a magnified inset of alveolar sacs.

Issues

Sea-Tac Airport is currently undergoing the largest and longest expansion in its history, collectively known as the Sustainable Airport Master Plan (SAMP). Some of it you can already hear, but you’re probably not aware of what it all means. Here’s what you need to know.

As the source for federal transportation grants, the Puget Sound Regional Council was charged with developing a system to meet the growing need for commercial aviation. When the search for a second airport failed, they authorized the Port of Seattle to build the Third Runway, with a mandate to develop a noise abatement and mitigation program. In their effort to stop the Third Runway, the ACC argued over every detail of the Port's efforts--including property buyouts and sound insulation. The dispute was meant to be settled by a three member Expert Arbitration Panel. This is their final report. It finds 2-1, that the Port's program was insufficient in several respects. Despite that, funding for the Third Runway was approved by the PSRC, and the 'Port Package' program, proceeded largely unchanged. Expert Arbitration Panel's final decision finding that the Port of Seattle had not shown sufficient reduction in real on-the-ground noise impacts to satisfy noise reduction conditions required for approval of a third runway at Sea-Tac International Airport. The majority decision concluded the Port's noise abatement programs were insufficient despite being impressive in scope.
