EXH AR026656: BMP Screening Study — Filtration Media Zinc & Toxicity Reduction Stormwater STIA
Researchers tested several filtration media, including leaf compost (CSF®) and soybean hulls, for their ability to remove zinc and reduce toxicity from stormwater runoff at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The study was prompted by prior water quality monitoring that linked stormwater toxicity to zinc from building materials in certain airport drainage areas. Results from these controlled laboratory tests were used to select the best-performing media for future on-site stormwater treatment trials at the airport. -

EXH AR021666: Declaration Dr. John Strand Supporting ACC Reply Motion Stay PCHB 01-133 01-160
Dr. John Strand, a fisheries biologist, submitted this declaration to the Washington Pollution Control Hearings Board challenging the state Department of Ecology's water quality certification for Sea-Tac Airport expansion. He argues that stormwater runoff from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport contains copper, lead, and zinc at levels exceeding Washington State Water Quality Criteria, citing the Port of Seattle's own 1995-1996 data showing metals concentrations downstream of airport outfalls far above allowable limits. The declaration was filed in support of the Airport Communities Coalition, representing several cities neighboring the airport, in their motion to stay the certification. -
