EXH AR026656: BMP Screening Study — Filtration Media Zinc & Toxicity Reduction Stormwater STIA

Researchers tested several filtration media, including leaf compost (CSF®) and soybean hulls, for their ability to remove zinc and reduce toxicity from stormwater runoff at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The study was prompted by prior water quality monitoring that linked stormwater toxicity to zinc from building materials in certain airport drainage areas. Results from these controlled laboratory tests were used to select the best-performing media for future on-site stormwater treatment trials at the airport.

Conference paper submitted to the Water Environment Federation for Watershed 2002, presenting results of a best management practice (BMP) screening study testing filtration media — including CSF® deciduous leaf compost, soybean hulls (SBH), extra fine leaf compost (XFCSF), commercial polyamine sponge, and zeolite/perlite — for reducing zinc concentrations and whole effluent toxicity (WET) in stormwater runoff at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Study conducted by Port Of Seattle following NPDES stormwater sampling identifying zinc from building materials as the source of toxicity. Tests used synthetic laboratory water spiked at 250 µg/l, 500 µg/l, and 2000 µg/l zinc (ZnCl2), passed through StormfilterTM cartridge units at up to 1 liter/sec (15 gpm).
