Is it Sea-Tac Airport or SEA?

Dyer Oxley January 14, 2026 If the Port of Seattle is successful, referencing the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport as “Sea-Tac” will go the way of Qwest Field, Washington State Convention Center, and KeyArena. Locals colloquially, and perhaps lovingly, call it “Sea-Tac Airport,” but in case you haven’t noticed, the Port of Seattle really wants you to

Summary — areas of agreement — Workshop #1 — Silence is golden

This document summarizes the areas of agreement reached at Workshop #1, titled 'Silence is Golden,' focusing on Sea-Tac Airport improvements and compatible land use in high-impact noise zones. Participants agreed that the airport is important to the community but has lost its former welcoming atmosphere, and suggested improvements such as lounge seating, art displays, and better amenities. The group also reached consensus that noise-sensitive uses like residences, schools, and hospitals should be prohibited in heavily affected areas, while open space, light industry, and recreational uses were seen as appropriate alternatives.

Sea-Tac Communities Plan program idea weighting introduction

This document outlines a planning framework for evaluating policy ideas related to Sea-Tac Airport and surrounding communities. Each idea is scored on two factors — technical feasibility (Possibility of Application) and community acceptance (Acceptance Factor) — which are multiplied together to produce an Index of Implementation Probability ranging from 0 to 9. Ideas scoring 0 are eliminated from consideration, while higher-scoring ideas advance as viable planning alternatives to be combined and refined in a subsequent phase of the planning process.

As the source for federal transportation grants, the Puget Sound Regional Council was charged with developing a system to meet the growing need for commercial aviation. When the search for a second airport failed, they authorized the Port of Seattle to build the Third Runway, with a mandate to develop a noise abatement and mitigation program. In their effort to stop the Third Runway, the ACC argued over every detail of the Port's efforts--including property buyouts and sound insulation. The dispute was meant to be settled by a three member Expert Arbitration Panel. This is their final report. It finds 2-1, that the Port's program was insufficient in several respects. Despite that, funding for the Third Runway was approved by the PSRC, and the 'Port Package' program, proceeded largely unchanged. Expert Arbitration Panel's final decision finding that the Port of Seattle had not shown sufficient reduction in real on-the-ground noise impacts to satisfy noise reduction conditions required for approval of a third runway at Sea-Tac International Airport. The majority decision concluded the Port's noise abatement programs were insufficient despite being impressive in scope.
