  • Flight Corridor Safety Program

The Port of Seattle has an ongoing program to remove trees around SEA Airport to improve safety during takeoffs and landings and replant in their place, native, low-growing trees. The first phase of work, completed in 2019, centered around trees on Port property.  The second phase of the work, centered on non-Port property, is nearing

Agreement for Entry, Vegetative Management, and Conveyance of Easement

The Port of Seattle reached an agreement with Hill Grove Cemetery Association to remove six trees on the cemetery's property near Seattle-Tacoma International Airport that were identified as obstructions to flight corridors. In exchange, the Port agreed to install a new fence and gate along the property's north boundary, replant vegetation, and pay all associated costs. The cemetery also granted the Port a permanent easement to prevent future obstructions from growing on the property.

Green Des Moines Partnership urban forest enhancement plan

The Green Des Moines Partnership Urban Forest Enhancement Plan is a collaborative initiative between the Port of Seattle and the City of Des Moines aimed at expanding and improving the urban tree canopy in the Des Moines, Washington area. The plan outlines strategies for planting, restoring, and maintaining urban forests as part of broader environmental mitigation efforts, likely connected to noise and air quality impacts from nearby Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. It represents a community-focused approach to greening the urban landscape through volunteer engagement and inter-agency partnership.

Issues

Sea-Tac Airport is currently undergoing the largest and longest expansion in its history, collectively known as the Sustainable Airport Master Plan (SAMP). Some of it you can already hear, but you’re probably not aware of what it all means. Here’s what you need to know.

As the source for federal transportation grants, the Puget Sound Regional Council was charged with developing a system to meet the growing need for commercial aviation. When the search for a second airport failed, they authorized the Port of Seattle to build the Third Runway, with a mandate to develop a noise abatement and mitigation program. In their effort to stop the Third Runway, the ACC argued over every detail of the Port's efforts--including property buyouts and sound insulation. The dispute was meant to be settled by a three member Expert Arbitration Panel. This is their final report. It finds 2-1, that the Port's program was insufficient in several respects. Despite that, funding for the Third Runway was approved by the PSRC, and the 'Port Package' program, proceeded largely unchanged. Expert Arbitration Panel's final decision finding that the Port of Seattle had not shown sufficient reduction in real on-the-ground noise impacts to satisfy noise reduction conditions required for approval of a third runway at Sea-Tac International Airport. The majority decision concluded the Port's noise abatement programs were insufficient despite being impressive in scope.
