Citing national security needs, the FCCand FAA take steps on UAS regulation

The FCC and FAA have taken steps to regulate drone operations near critical infrastructure, with the FAA proposing a new petition-based system allowing facility owners to apply for drone flight restrictions over their sites. The proposed rule would create two levels of restricted airspace and applies to facilities across 16 critical infrastructure sectors, such as energy, transportation, and healthcare. State laws, such as Florida's Unmanned Aircraft Systems Act, may impose additional independent restrictions on drone operations beyond the federal framework.

Acoustical Testing Results for SIRRPP — May 2026

Harris Miller Miller & Hanson Inc. (HMMH) conducted sound insulation testing at 30 homes near Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) in March 2026 to measure how much aircraft noise penetrates indoors. The study found that none of the 30 homes exceeded the FAA's 45-decibel interior noise threshold required to qualify for sound insulation treatments under current federal policy. However, nine homes had at least one individual room where interior noise levels surpassed 45 decibels, suggesting those specific rooms could benefit from upgraded windows or doors.

Acoustical Testing Results for SEA Repair and Replacement Program

Technical memorandum from Harris Miller Miller & Hanson (HMMH) to Julie Kinzie, Sr. Environmental Program Manager Sound Insulation, reporting acoustical testing results for the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) Repair and Replacement Program, March 2026. HMMH measured median interior Day-Night Average Sound Level (DNL) for 30 residential structures in Des Moines, Burien, and Seattle using HBK

(Travis Ness/The Seattle Times/TNS) By Lauren Rosenblatt Seattle Times The Federal Aviation Administration should do more to address safety risks from an engine feature on Boeing’s 737 Max that has twice filled planes with smoke, a government watchdog
  • Day-Night Average Sound Level Calculation

This diagram explains the DNL (Day-Night Average Sound Level) metric used in airport noise policy, showing a bar chart of hourly LEQ sound levels (in dBA) over a 24-hour period labeled 'One Day of Events (DNL).' It highlights the 10-dB nighttime penalty applied to noise events occurring during nighttime hours, which is a standard FAA methodology for calculating community noise exposure.
  • SEL Sound Exposure Level and Energy Metrics

An educational diagram illustrating acoustic measurement concepts including Sound Exposure Level (SEL), Lmax, LEQ, and energy, plotted as sound level (dB) over time (seconds). The graphic shows how SEL compresses a noise event's total energy into a normalized 1-second value, with Lmax appearing approximately 10dB above the LEQ reference line.

    ZSE Radar Cheat Sheet

The ZSE Radar Cheat Sheet is an air traffic control reference guide covering radar separation standards, identification procedures, and communication phraseology used in the Seattle Center (ZSE) airspace. It outlines required lateral and vertical separation distances between IFR and VFR aircraft in different airspace classes, as well as rules for vectoring, handoffs, approach clearances, and wake turbulence. The document serves as a quick-reference tool for controllers managing aircraft in and around the Seattle area, including procedures relevant to operations near Sea-Tac Airport.
