Urban Ultrafine Particles – Advisory Group Meeting

The University of Washington held an Advisory Group Meeting on October 3, 2025, focused on urban ultrafine particles (nano-particles) and their sources, including aviation-related emissions near areas like Sea-Tac Airport. The meeting aimed to foster dialogue, address knowledge gaps from the MOV-UP study, identify priority research questions, and guide scientific research on air quality monitoring. Advisors were asked to provide feedback on study design and methodology, with a time commitment including annual meetings and optional review of study outputs.

Impacts of Aviation Emissions on Air Quality Near Hanscom Field, Bedford, Massachusetts – Results of a Two-Season Monitoring Campaign

A comprehensive study measuring ultrafine particles, lead, and other air pollutants from aviation emissions at Hanscom Field across four surrounding Massachusetts towns. The study found that UFP concentrations were up to two-fold higher at downwind sites and often exceeded WHO guidelines, with the highest impacts in Bedford and Lexington.

Puget Sound Clean Air Agency Monitoring Site Tour: Agenda and Overview

This document presents materials from a Puget Sound Clean Air Agency Monitoring Site Tour held in September 2025, covering the agency's mission to protect air quality across King, Pierce, Snohomish, and Kitsap counties. It outlines key programs including climate action planning, wood stove replacement, and diesel emissions reduction, with a focus on fine particulate matter (PM2.5), which accounts for 90% of cardiac and respiratory health risk from air pollution in the region. Note: this document relates to regional air quality monitoring and does not contain information about Sea-Tac Airport noise policy.

SMPS Particle Bin Counts and Geometric Mean at SeaTac North

This contour plot displays Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) particle bin counts (log10 scale, 2.6–5.0) by particle size (5–382 nm) and local PST time (08:31–12:54) at the SeaTac North monitoring station on September 15, 2025. Brown diamond markers indicate the geometric mean particle diameter over time, generally ranging between approximately 15–30 nm. The chart was generated at 13:08:16 local time on 2025-09-15, with last UTC data at 19:54:26.

Issues

Sea-Tac Airport is currently undergoing the largest and longest expansion in its history, collectively known as the Sustainable Airport Master Plan (SAMP). Some of it you can already hear, but you’re probably not aware of what it all means. Here’s what you need to know.

As the source for federal transportation grants, the Puget Sound Regional Council was charged with developing a system to meet the growing need for commercial aviation. When the search for a second airport failed, they authorized the Port of Seattle to build the Third Runway, with a mandate to develop a noise abatement and mitigation program. In their effort to stop the Third Runway, the ACC argued over every detail of the Port's efforts--including property buyouts and sound insulation. The dispute was meant to be settled by a three member Expert Arbitration Panel. This is their final report. It finds 2-1, that the Port's program was insufficient in several respects. Despite that, funding for the Third Runway was approved by the PSRC, and the 'Port Package' program, proceeded largely unchanged. Expert Arbitration Panel's final decision finding that the Port of Seattle had not shown sufficient reduction in real on-the-ground noise impacts to satisfy noise reduction conditions required for approval of a third runway at Sea-Tac International Airport. The majority decision concluded the Port's noise abatement programs were insufficient despite being impressive in scope.
