Response to Comment #16 by David DeForest to Linda Logan (September 2001) critiquing Shephard (1999) tissue screening concentrations (TSCs) for lead (0.32 mg/kg dw) and zinc (100 mg/kg dw) as applied to cutthroat trout from Miller Creek. Argues Shephard TSCs derived from EPA water quality criteria and bioconcentration factors (BCFs) are not appropriate for cutthroat trout; proposes alternative fish-specific TSCs using chronic toxicity data for brook trout (Salmo fontinalis), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), and fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas). Calculated fish-specific TSCs for lead (4.9–14.8 mg/kg dw), zinc (182–188 mg/kg dw), and copper using BCF-exposure concentration relationships. Measured cutthroat trout concentrations from Miller Creek: lead 0.31–0.74 mg/kg dw, zinc 129–145 mg/kg dw. Cites Dyer et al. (2000), Brix and DeForest (2000), Sinley et al.
