Academic journal article published in Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (Vol. 14, No. 6, 1995) by Fisher, Knott, Turley, Turley, Yonkos, and Ziegler from the University of Maryland and Maryland Department of the Environment. Study characterizes acute whole effluent toxicity (WET) of storm water from Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI) on fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) and daphnid (Daphnia magna), with LC50 values as low as 1.0–2.0% effluent. Toxicity attributed to ethylene glycol Type I deicing mixtures and propylene glycol Type II anti-icing mixtures used during winter storm events February 12 and February 26, 1993. Chemical analyses included glycols, BOD, COD, ammonia nitrogen, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, total petroleum hydrocarbons, and total toxic organics. Sites tested: Kitten Branch (Site No. 1) and Muddy Bridge Branch (Site No. 4). NPDES permit, toxicity reduction evaluation (TRE), 1,4-dioxane, high oxygen demand, and elevated total nitrogen identified as issues. AR037691.
