Notes
Peer-reviewed article published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health (MDPI) by Zafari, Jiao, Will, Li, and Muennig (Columbia University/University of Maryland) examining the health and economic costs of year-round use of the TNNIS Climb departure route at LaGuardia Airport (LGA), Queens, NY, implemented in 2012 under the FAA NextGen automated flight system. The study develops a Markov decision-analytic model comparing limited vs. year-round TNNIS Climb use, finding an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) of $10,006/QALY gained for the limited use scenario, with incremental lifetime costs of $11,288 and 1.13 QALYs per person exposed. The model estimates health impacts — cardiovascular disease (ICD-10 Chapter I, relative risk 1.14 for >60 vs. <50 dB DNL) and generalized anxiety disorder (odds ratio 2.0) — on approximately 83,807 residents in Queens Community Boards 7 and 11 exposed to 60+ dB DNL noise contours from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey noise monitoring data.
