Twelve Sites Identified as Potential Supplemental Airports

In May 1994, the Puget Sound Regional Council announced that consultants had identified 12 potential sites for a major supplemental airport in the central Puget Sound region, narrowed down from an initial list of 25 candidates. The sites, stretching from Stanwood in the north to the Tanwax Lake area in Pierce County in the south, were deemed to have no flaws severe enough to rule them out from further consideration. The study was part of a broader effort to determine whether a supplemental airport could relieve pressure on Sea-Tac and potentially eliminate the need for a controversial third runway.

Notes

Press release and accompanying site analysis memo from Puget Sound Regional Council (PSRC), dated May 27, 1994, identifying 12 candidate sites for a Major Supplemental Airport (MSA) in the four-county central Puget Sound region (King, Kitsap, Pierce, Snohomish counties). TAMS Consultants, Inc. screened 25 sites; 12 remain under consideration including Stanwood, Arlington, Marysville-West (Tulalip Indian Reservation), Marysville-East, Bothell/Mill Creek, Duvall, Redmond, Lake Sawyer, Enumclaw, McChord Air Force Base, Frederickson, and Tanwax Lake. Sites must accommodate a minimum 2,200-acre footprint with two independent runways up to 10,000 feet. The study memo describes the Site Search Area process, MSA planning criteria, and next steps: Working Group review June 24, Policy Boards joint session July 14, public comment period through August 26, and Executive Board decision. Council self-imposed deadline of April 1, 1996 to determine MSA feasibility versus third runway at Sea-Tac Airport. Contact: Richard Milne, (206) 587-5060; public hotline (206) 517-9487.
