The Port of Seattle Commission reviewed a request in December 2023 to authorize an additional $2,494,000 in funding for the Surface Area Management (SAM) project at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, bringing the total project cost to $15,865,000. The SAM system improves airfield situational awareness by installing sensors and cameras to monitor aircraft movement, gate activity, and operational efficiency. Cost increases were driven by design delays, a change in construction contracting method, and the need to amend a vendor contract with SAAB, Inc. for additional equipment.
