About an hour into the flight, the pilots returned the plane to Newark after a reported mechanical problem, a spokesperson for the Port Authority told PIX11 News.
A representative for United Airlines said the plane was carrying 176 passengers and six crew members.
United flight 1544 to Las Vegas returned to Newark Liberty International Airport to address a possible mechanical issue. The flight landed safely, and all passengers deplaned normally at the gate. We have arranged for a different aircraft to take our customers to Las Vegas this morning.

Several recent plane crashes have caused new or increasing worries over flying. If you’re wondering, “What’s the likelihood of dying in a plane crash?” the answer is one in 13 million, according to a study from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In comparison, the likelihood of being in a car crash is one in 366, according to data from the National Safety Council.
