The Port of Seattle (the “Port”) announced today notification letters are being mailed to individuals whose data was impacted in the August 2024 cyberattack on the Port, including Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) and maritime facilities. The threat actors accessed and downloaded some personal information from previously used Port systems for employee, contractor, and parking data. The Port holds very little information about airport or maritime passengers, and systems processing payments were not affected.
The Port has completed its investigation and is sending approximately 90,000 individual notifications to affected individuals with an available mailing address. Approximately 71,000 individuals affected live in Washington state. Mailed notices will include information on how affected individuals can access free credit monitoring services from the Port. Individuals’ information that was downloaded included some combination of names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers (or last four digits of Social Security number), driver’s license or other government identification card numbers, and some medical information.
On August 24, 2024, the Port identified system outages consistent with a cyberattack. The Port promptly initiated its incident response processes. Our teams isolated critical systems and took certain systems offline. An investigation assisted by cybersecurity and technology experts investigated the incident and what data may have been impacted. The Port also notified law enforcement and worked to add further protections to harden its systems.
At no point did this incident affect the ability to safely travel to or from SEA Airport or use the Port’s maritime facilities. The proprietary systems of major airline and cruise partners were not affected, nor were the systems of federal partners like the Federal Aviation Administration, Transportation Security Administration, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
