DES MOINES — The superintendent of the Highline School District announced yesterday that he will retire at the end of the school year.
Joe McGeehan, who will turn 65 in March, took over the Highline schools in 1994. During his tenure, the district won approval in 2002 of a $189.5 million construction bond issue after voters had rejected bond requests in 1992 and 2000.
The district stretches from White Center to Des Moines, with Sea-Tac Airport at its center. The 2002 bond approval activated an agreement with the federal government, the state and the Port of Seattle, with each agency putting up $50 million to match the district’s contribution to an aircraft noise abatement program in schools.
The school board plans to conduct a national search for a new superintendent and announce McGeehan’s successor in March.
